The Ditch - a.k.a. The Southern Marble Company Pipeline - (Don't) Forget About It Ep. 4
In 1894, the Southern Marble Company of Marble Hill, Georgia built a two-mile long water channel/pipeline known, locally referred to as the Ditch. For about 70 years people walked along it on a wooden boardwalk while it was maintained by the marble company. Eventually it fell into disrepair after being abandoned in the 1960s. At its apex, the water from the pipeline was strong enough to strip the paint from a vehicle! The Talking Rock Origin Story - (Don't) Forget About It Episode 2
In this episode I visit one of the origin story sites of the name Talking Rock. The Late Reverend Charles Walker wrote about this in his Cherokee Footprints series. While James Mooney felt the name was based on a translation from a Cherokee phrase, others claimed the "talking rock" was a rock from which talks were given.
